‘The soul has an absolute, unforgiving need for regular excursions into enchantment’.
Thomas Moore, The Re-enchantment of Everyday Life
Art is the way I bring enchantment into my life. Alone in my sunny studio, I can get lost in my imagination, play with materials, and explore form and colour.
Whether I am working realistically, imaginatively or abstractly, the key element in every piece for me is the magic of discovery.
Give something your undivided attention and it will speak to you. Go deeply enough into a subject and it will reveal its interiority.
When I am in the flow of my art, the world shines and sings, flashes in and out of existence, speaks……… and is silent.
In addition to my fine art work, I have always been fascinated by letters. I trained with master calligrapher Arnold Bank at Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh. For 10 years calligraphy was my primary art expression, so writing appears in my work regularly.
The alphabet as a rhythmic artwork intrigues me. But I also do commissioned hand lettering work such as logos, signs, invitations, quotations, etc.
