Welcome to ArtWell
I'm Sarah, a visual artist, active in several different disciplines. I have a BFA from Carnegie-Mellon Univesity
where I was a graphic design/calligraphy major.
The first years of my career in Pittsburgh were spent working as a calligrapher, fine artist, and graphic designer. Later I went to live in an international community in Scotland which pioneers alternative lifestyles, spirituality, and ecology. There I worked as a graphic designer, and helped develop educational and arts programs.
As a result of the 6 years spent living in community, I became interested in socially engaged arts spent the next 15 years working part time as an artist in healthcare settings.
From my work with people with dementia, grew my recently published book, 'CHOCOLATE RAIN, 100 ideas for a creative approach to activities in dementia care',(2011)Hawker Publishers, London.
Meanwhile I'd relocated to Holland where I've lived with my Dutch husband for the past 30 years. A chance meeting with a local
harpschord builder and my background in illuminated manuscripts and fine craft led to a parallel career as decorator
of period instrument replicas- specifically 17 century Flemish Ruckers harpsichords. I've painted 7 soundboards so far.
and have been privileged to work with some of the best builders in the field- most recently, Matthias Griewisch.
This site was designed 6 years ago as an online professional profile. It was built by a professional website designer and I am not fluent enough in html to make the changes I'd like. So Artwell.nl is slowly being phased out. You will be able to find me on Wordpress with a brand new ArtWell site, this summer.
Please see my blog for thoughts on the arts, alternative paths for artists, and new impulses in the arts.
My book, 'Chocolate Rain'is a hands-on creative manual for caregivers and friends/family of people who have dementia. I've included over 100 easy to do activities and illustrated them. It was presented in November at the 5th UK Dementia Congress in Bournemouth, UK and was enthusiastically received.
The German language version will be published by Hans huber BV in 2013. For more about my book, please go to my blog.
